City of Charlotte, Department of Veteran Affairs Launch 'Housing Our Heroes'

The City of Charlotte, Mecklenburg County and the Department of Veterans Affairs is teaming up to make sure veterans who return home from service have a home.

On Veterans Day, leaders announced the launch of "Housing Our Heroes.”

The goal is to end Mecklenburg County's estimated veteran homeless population of a little more than 200 people.

Leaders are asking employers, housing groups and citizens to chip in to end veteran homelessness in the Charlotte area.

"We are a veterans supporting, loving community, and I think this is a great place to come and live and to be supported and be accepted and then to contribute as part of the community," said Peter Safir, Mecklenburg Co. Homeless Services director.

For more information on how you can help end veteran homelessness, visit: HousingOurHeroes.charmeck.org.

Searching for a house — and school information
My wife and I started shopping for a home last week, at the right time for us, but perhaps at the wrong time for North Carolina public schools. Our search coincides with the release of the inaugural North Carolina School Performance Grades, which are intended to be an objective measure of how our public schools are doing. How those grades are calculated has been the subject of much debate during the last couple of weeks. School districts say the grades are a snapshot of school performance—and not necessarily a complete picture of a particular school’s quality.

8 Benefits of Buying a House at Year’s End

Summer may be real estate’s busy season, but winter offers great opportunities for buying a house, especially for renters looking to become homeowners, growing families trading up to larger houses and baby boomers seeking homes to fit their evolving lifestyles.

Generally speaking, your housing choices during the late fall are still healthy. October and November are great months to go house hunting. December is usually sparse, market-wise, but if that fits your timeline, you could luck out.

U.S. Urges AIG, MGIC to Back Fastest-Growing VA Loans

Private insurers are considering a request by U.S. officials to guarantee mortgages for veterans -- the fastest growing part of the market.

The Department of Housing and Urban Development is urging mortgage insurers that rely on Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac for business to offer supplemental protection for lenders to military members and veterans. Only 25 percent of VA loan amounts are backed by the Department of Veterans Affairs -- a limit that keeps some firms from fully participating in the program, Ginnie Mae President Ted Tozer said.

Housing Buoyed by 20-Year High for Vet’s Loans: Mortgages
America’s fragile housing recovery is getting a boost from military buyers using VA mortgages as the U.S. draws down troops after more than a decade of combat in Iraq and Afghanistan. About 4.7 million full-time troops and reservists served during the wars and many are now able to take advantage of one of the easiest and cheapest paths to homeownership. The program’s share of new mortgages, at a 20-year high, is also increasing as other types of government-backed loans have grown more costly.

Should I Sell My Home Now or Wait Until the Spring?
There are many questions homeowners ask themselves during the selling process. "How much will my home sell for?"  "How much should I list my home for?"  "Who should I select as a real estate agent to sell my home?"  "What if the real estate agent overprices my home?"  Last but not least, "Is this a good time to be selling a home?" is also a very common question that real estate agents are asked.
